Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine as part of the reform school education proposes to make changes to the educational process. The reforms will affect curricula, and child development. In addition, changes should be expected in the structure school year, which many consultants and advisors recommend dividing into trimesters. Until this year, all public and most private schools divided the academic year into semesters.
Qualified specialists are confident that this reform school curriculum very important for proper distribution of study time. It will make it possible to make the periods of study between short week-long holidays almost identical. Such an organization educational process children school age will allow teachers and administration of educational institutions to more harmoniously distribute the educational load on the student.

However, the reform of the structure of the academic year, apparently, will not come into force until 2018. According to the letter of the Ministry of Education and Science dated June 7, 2017 No. 1/9-315 “About the structure of the 2017-2018 academic year”, classes in general education educational institutions regardless of subordination, types and forms of ownership should begin on Knowledge Day - September 1 and end no later than July 1, 2018.
The academic year 2017-2018 will be divided into 2 semesters:
- I semester - September 1 - December 22, 2017,
- II semester - January 10 - May 31, 2018.
When are the school holidays 2017-2018?
- Autumn holidays: October 30 - November 5, 2017,
- The winter vacation: December 25, 2017 - January 9, 2018,
- Spring break: March 26 - April 1, 2018,
- Summer holidays: from the end of the school year to August 31, 2018.

There will be a total of 157 school days and 106 days off during the 2016-2017 academic year.
- September 2016: total days - 30, school days 22, days off - 8.
- October 2016: total days - 31, school days - 20, days off - 11.
- November 2016: total days - 30, school days - 18, days off - 12.
- December 2016: total days - 31, school days - 17, weekends - 14.
- January 2017: total days - 31, school days - 16, days off - 15.
- February 2017: total days - 28, school days - 19, days off - 9.
- March 2017: total days - 31, school days - 17, weekends - 14.
- April 2017: total days - 30, school days - 20, days off - 10.
- May 2017: total days - 31, school days - 17, days off - 14.
Please note that the academic calendar for 2015-2016 is a recommendation. These dates may vary and are subject to change.
Vacations in the 2016-2017 academic year
- Autumn holidays in the 2016-2017 academic year will begin on October 29, 2016 and end on November 6, 2016. The duration of the autumn holidays 2016 will be 9 days.
- Winter New Year holidays in the 2016-2017 academic year will begin on December 24, 2016 and will last until January 8, 2017. The duration of the winter holidays will be 16 days.
- Spring break in the 2016-2017 academic year will begin on March 25, 2017 and will last until April 2, 2017. The duration of spring break will be 9 days.
- Summer holidays in 2017 will begin on May 27, 2017 and will last until September 1, 2017.
Additional holidays for first-graders may be introduced from February 18 to February 26, 2017. In addition, students in Russian educational institutions will have days off on February 23, 2016, March 8, 2016, May 2, 2016, and May 9, 2016.
It is also necessary to recall that vacation dates are only recommended by the Ministry of Education, and the final decision on the timing and duration of vacations rests with the teaching council of educational institutions.
Additional holidays or rescheduling of holidays in schools and other educational institutions are possible for the following reasons:
- Low air temperature- minus 25 degrees Celsius for primary school; minus 28 degrees - for high school; minus 30 degrees for students in grades 10 and 11.
- Low temperature in classrooms. When the air temperature in classrooms is below +18 degrees, it is prohibited to conduct classes.
- Quarantine and exceeding the morbidity threshold. Quarantine can be declared in a separate school, a separate district, city or region if the epidemic incidence threshold of 25% of the total number of students is exceeded.
Vacations for students in the 2016-2017 academic year
There are significantly fewer vacations at universities, namely, students rest only in winter and summer. It is difficult to find out the exact schedule, since each university assigns them depending on the sessions. If we talk about winter holidays, then the holidays begin at the end of January and end in the second week of February. In the summer, everything also depends on the session and practice, which can be scheduled for June, which is why it will be possible to go on vacation only in July. Also, the practice may be postponed to August, and the holidays will begin in mid-June. Everything depends on the specific university, therefore, in order to carefully plan your vacation, it is better to first ask representatives of the administration of the Higher Educational Institution. The only thing that can be said for sure is that the holidays should not be less than 6 weeks.
The time for vacation is chosen by the school administration independently, but at the same time adheres to the recommendations established by the Ministry of Education.
Some schools have different holiday times. This is due to the type of training provided in a particular school. In some schools, children study in quarters, and in others in trimesters.
Vacation Features
Schoolchildren studying in quarters annually have the same periods of rest:
- Autumn. Nine-day holidays - the last week of October and the first week of November.
- Winter. 2 weeks of New Year holidays.
- Spring. The final week of March.
- Summer. All summer period.
First-graders have one more week of rest in the winter, as they need more time to rest due to their age.
In the trimester type of training, everything is simpler. Students attend classes for 5 weeks and then have a week off. The exception is the New Year holidays, which do not depend on the type of training.
Autumn holiday period
After the summer, it is difficult for children to get involved in their studies, and they look forward to the onset of the rest period.
School holidays, the most long-awaited ones, come in the 2016-2017 academic year during leaf fall - in the fall. During the week of rest there is one public holiday (November 4), so children will begin to rest at the end of October.
School will begin on November 7, 2016.
For those who study according to the trimester type, the rest will take place exactly twice:
- 10.2016-12.10.2016;
- 10.2016-24.10.2016.
Don't forget that some teachers ask homework on vacation. Come to school prepared.
Winter holiday period
The students are waiting New Year with special desire. After all, this is not only the arrival of Santa Claus with gifts, but also a break from lessons and daily homework.
Holidays during the coldest time of the year divide the school year in half. At this time, students and their parents spend holidays together at home or go on vacation. The winter holiday period is the same in all schools. It lasts 2 weeks.
Holiday schedule in schools, universities and secondary institutions vocational education in Moscow are approved individually for each educational institution by its director, rector or other decision-maker. In practice, the vacation schedule rarely differs from the recommendations of a higher authority.
Russian schools live according to two academic “calendars”: quarters and trimesters. Depending on this, and also based on the recommendations of the Ministry of Education, educational institutions themselves determine the dates of the holidays. In general, it is beneficial for the school to adhere to the generally established framework, since general holidays mean greater opportunities for organizing quality children's leisure time: performances, excursions, concerts, etc.
Holidays in schools with a quarterly education system
Those who study in quarters have holidays four times a year - autumn, winter, spring and summer.
Autumn holidays 2019–2020 academic year
Of these, the dates of autumn holidays at the end of October and the beginning of November are less stable: their end date depends on the day national unity, which is celebrated on November 4th.
New Year holidays 2019–2020 academic year
New Year holidays, as a rule, begin in the last week of December and end on the 10th of January. Schoolchildren go to school on Monday. Winter holidays will continue for the 2019/2020 academic year from December 31 to January 12. First-graders will have additional holidays in winter* – from 17 to 24 February.
Spring break 2019–2020 school year
The situation with holidays in the spring is much simpler - the dates do not depend on holidays. Spring break falls in the last week of March and the first week of April. In 2020, schoolchildren will have a rest from March 23 to March 31.
Summer holidays 2019–2020 academic year
Summer holidays will start as usual - from June 1 to September 1 Schoolchildren are waiting for three whole happy months free from lessons.
* For students of first grades and classes of correctional and developmental education.
In addition to scheduled holidays, school classes may be canceled for the following reasons:

The Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation offers its recommendations in the formation of holidays in educational institutions Russia. However, as in the last academic year, schools, colleges, universities and other institutions choose when to rest and may move the recommended vacation time by a week or two.
As practice shows, the vast majority of schools follow general guidelines, which provides an excellent opportunity to hold many city events for children and teenagers: competitions, theatrical performances, themed holidays, etc.
How is the school calendar formed?
The 2016-2017 academic year begins on Thursday, September 1, 2016. Ends school year in all educational institutions differently: from 24, 25 or 30 May 2017.
As a rule, the first day of school holidays begins with the beginning of the school week, that is, on Monday. The period of school holidays is directly influenced by the method of teaching in a particular school.
As you know, there are two educational systems in educational institutions:
- by trimester;
- by quarters.
If the school has chosen a trimester study schedule, then students will study from September to May inclusive for exactly 5 weeks, after which they will rest for a week. And again 5 weeks of training and a week of vacation. The only exceptions are summer holidays and winter holidays, which in the 2016-2017 school year include two weeks of rest for all students.
If the school chooses the option of studying in quarters, then the following vacation schedule is established for all students:
- nine days in autumn: October – last days, November – first week;
- two New Year's weeks: the final days of December and ten days of January;
- seven spring days: end of March;
- additional holidays are provided for students in special classes and first-graders: seven days in winter;
- three months in the summer.
Autumn, golden autumn
The wonderful autumn season gives all schoolchildren their very first school holidays. Will begin autumn vacation October 30, but since this is Sunday, then, in fact, the autumn holidays will begin on October 31, and the last day of rest will be November 6.
During trimester training, in autumn period children will be gifted with two weeks of rest:
- first week – October 10-16, 2016;
- second week – November 21-27, 2016.
Festive New Year's winter
In the middle of the school year, it's time to take a short break. It is in winter that many parents arrange a family vacation with an outing to sights, interesting places, or even going abroad.
Many people prefer warm countries to the frosty Russian winter and go on New Year's holidays, for example, to Egypt or Tunisia. Winter holidays include two wonderful, truly magical holidays - New Year and Christmas. This is a time of miracles and fun, and you need to spend it in such a way that there are enough memories and impressions for the whole year.
The 2016-2017 academic year will begin exactly on December 26, 2016 and will last until January 9, 2017. Already on January 10, schoolchildren will have to return to their desks to continue to conquer knowledge with renewed vigor.
Beautiful spring
Spring is a time when it is extremely difficult to concentrate on lessons, because the sun is warming outside the window, leaves and flowers are blooming, and you really want to be on the other side of the transparent glass, and not sit on a school bench, trying with all your might to listen to the words of the teacher.
That is why schoolchildren are given the opportunity to relax a little before the most stressful period - in recent weeks academic year with many tests, tests and competitive programs.
The spring break will begin on March 27 and end on April 3. During this time, you need to gain strength before the important stage of the 2017 academic year.
When the school administration chooses a trimester form of education, spring break will begin on April 5 and will last until April 11.
Hot long-awaited summer
In the summer, children are entitled to a long vacation. Already with the first warm rays of the sun, schoolchildren find it difficult to study, and with the arrival of hot summer, all thoughts about studying disappear. As a rule, after May 25, no one really studies anymore. Begin summer holidays. This is probably the most favorite time for all students.
All schoolchildren should remember that resting during the holidays is a good thing, but we must not forget that during this period you can fill in some gaps in your knowledge and tighten up your “tails.”
