How ancient craftsmanship turned into high art

People have been working on bone processing since antiquity. And the development of bone carving creativity begins with simple utilitarian items. Traditionally, carvers made various hunting and fishing tools, household items, sacred amulets and ornaments from bone.

This material is still in demand among the inhabitants of the Yamal North. The bone is used in the manufacture of harness parts, scabbards, ornaments for a man's belt. As an independent type of arts and crafts artistic processing bones in the area arose relatively recently - only by the XX century. The demand for bone carving products arose as a result of the active settlement of the region.

Today, no one doubts the existence of a special Yamal school. Modern artists-bone carvers, based on the traditions and skills of many generations, transform the ancient craft into high art. To study it more widely and systematically, to identify common features in images, themes, in 2002 the district House of Crafts brought all the carvers together. This is how the idea of organizing an interregional exhibition of artistic bone carving art "Soul of the North" was born.
